When we use the app, we’re putting pieces of our story inside it.

🎮 Core Activity: Draw Your Family Data Map (30 minutes of holiday fun)

Happy holidays - many of us may have a bit more “flexible” time with the kids that needs filling, so I’m offering my first 30min ritual that you can choose to do all at once, or easily break into 3 x less than 10min parts over January.

Tonight’s ritual has 3 simple, kid-approachable concepts
1. imagine each app carrying an invisible backpack, with our data in it.
2. we use traffic lights as a visual way to decide what we are comfortable sharing with whom
3. Our Treasure Chest contains our private data and stays with us. We choose if we ever move a piece from our chest into an app’s backpack.

Materials: Paper, markers (green/yellow/red), one app you use together.

We’re going to map where tiny pieces of your child’s story travel when they use one familiar app.

Prereader tip: Your child can draw symbols instead of words (camera 📷, heart ❤️, house 🏠). You write the label together. My 3-y-o tells me what each🖍️ means.

Step 0 - Pick the App (1 minute)

Choose a game, drawing app, or learning app your child already knows.

“Tonight we’re going to be Data Detectives for just one app. We’ll find where it sends tiny pieces of our story.”

Step 1 - Draw Your Child and the App (3 minutes)

Draw a simple target around your child:

Your The same info could be different colours in different places - for example, your home address is probably green for the doctor, but might be red for a random game.

Use:

🟢 Green → we’re okay with this

🟡 Yellow → not sure; we want to ask

🔴 Red → no thanks

Let your child choose the colour for each arrow.

“For this one, the app gets [your data]. your feet, both of you facing forward, trusting each other enough to lean in (literally). Their tiny voice led the way: “Forward… stop… left!” and you followed, step by imperfect step. You felt that moment the closeness, the concentration, the burst of laughter when a pillow became a “boulder” and a tickle storm erupted.

It takes a village to raise curious, empathetic and responsible AI natives.

What you didn’t see is the quiet confidence building inside them: I can guide. I can fix. I can figure this out.

Tonight’s activity continues exactly that. Your child now guides a tiny digital turtle who listens just as earnestly. And when things go wrong (we make sure they always do), your child becomes the one who turns confusion into clarity.

This is the gentle bridge from physical play to digital thinking: the computer, like that wobbly walk, doesn’t know where to go. It makes mistakes, guesses, and needs us to guide it thoughtfully.

🧡 Parent Primer: Why Turtles Teach Coding (and AI Thinking) So Well

Educational research across MIT, Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child, and early robotics programs points to three early skills that matter long before kids ever use a “real” programming language. They tend to show up in the smallest daily moments:

Sequencing ordering steps to reach a goal.

Debugging noticing what went wrong and adjusting one thing.

Iteration trying again with tiny, intentional tweaks.

The turtle metaphor made famous through Logo has lasted for decades because kids naturally empathize with a creature that is earnest, literal, and a bit clumsy. Perfect, because computers (and AI) are exactly that.

Why this matters for AI: Kids learn that AI isn’t magic it’s literal. If you ask vaguely, it guesses. If you ask clearly, it does better. Precision becomes empowerment, and we guide that power gently and responsibly.

🧩 SAMI Scaffold (The Subtle Backbone)

Use SAMI to prepare any safe, kid-friendly AI prompt:

Situation Who it’s for, age, context.
Aim What “done” looks like.
Measures Tone, safety, reading level, avoid private info.
Iteration Tweak or question after the first answer.

This is the same structure we’ve used every week. Light, predictable, and empowering.

🎮 The Turtle Treasure Code (Core Activity)

Time: 12–15 minutes
Ages: 5–12 (bonus rounds scale up)
Outcome: Kids teach a turtle, fix bugs, add rules, and discover their first loop.

If your house is anything like ours, the turtle will do at least one move that makes your kid giggle-snort. Isn’t that when the learning starts.

🟢 STEP 1 THE SETUP (copy/paste)

This transforms your AI chat into the Turtle Game Master. Keep the emoji rules intact for now as requested.

We are playing a coding game for kids called “The Turtle Treasure Code.”
You are the “Turtle Game Master.” I am the kid programmer (no personal info).

YOUR CORE RULES:
1. SAMI SAFETY: Keep all responses safe, encouraging, and clear for a child. No private info.
2. VISUALS: Always use Emojis to draw a 5x5 Grid Map.
 (🟩=Grass, 🐢=Me, 🏴‍☠️=Treasure, 🪨=Rock, 🕳️=Hole, 🪱=Worm)
3. SHOW, DON’T TELL: Don’t lecture. Act out every step.
4. CONSISTENCY: Grid stays 5x5 every turn.
5. PERSONA: You are enthusiastic, literal, and silly. If the code is wrong, fail hilariously.

We are both facing the same direction. “Forward!” she declares, gripping my hands. We shuffle through the living room in unison. With each tiny step I take (her feet riding on top of mine), she chirps a high-pitched “beep.”

“Beep... beep... stop!” she commands, noticing a pillow “boulder” ahead. I freeze, trying not to laugh. “Turn left,” she says solemnly, and we pivot to avoid a crash. Off we go again: “beep, beep, boop.” We pass the toy basket which in our game triggers a “tickle storm!” I swoop her up amid squeals and laughter.

In this silly walking game, my children are giving me step-by-step instructions and adjusting them whenever we nearly bump into something…and sometimes…after we bump into something! Without realizing it, we are playing our first algorithm and even doing a bit of debugging when our steps go off-course.

Thanks for reading Parent in the Loop! Next post we’ll add screens and learn how we teach a computer, in a really simple and approach way.

Algorithm = A clear list of steps that solves a problem or reaches a goal.
Or as kids might say: “A how-to list for what happens next.”

If you’ve ever given your child directions to brush their teeth (“wet brush, add toothpaste, scrub, rinse”) or followed a recipe, congratulations - you’ve used an algorithm. Computers use them too (just written in code) to do everything from starting up to creating documents to sorting photos to recommending songs.

Why teach it through play?
Research shows that when kids break things into steps, like brushing teeth or stacking Legos, they’re training the same planning muscles used in math and problem solving. It helps them believe, “I can figure things out.”

Debugging is just a friendly way to say fixing mistakes. When something goes wrong, we pause and say, “Oops, let’s try that again.” or “what might we change to fix that?” That mindset turns frustration into experimentation. It teaches persistence, adaptability, and confidence.

💬 One-liner to share with your kid: “An algorithm is a step-by-step plan. When the plan goes wrong, we debug - that means fix it and try again.”

Tip for parents of different ages: For ages 3–6, keep it physical and visual by using toys or movement to show steps and fixes (“If the block falls, try again”). For ages 7–10+, connect it to planning tasks or creative writing—show how a story outline or recipe is also an algorithm that can be debugged when details are missing.

🧩 I’ve seen variations everywhere, from academic literature to kid coding, math and logic tutorials, and there are a few “build your first robot” kits that anchor to this.

Allergens and preferences : The classic is a Peanut Butter and Jelly (PB&J) sandwich, swap in preferred ingredients or change it to another easy meal they are familiar with…or non-food props (toy food, paper cutouts, or blocks). One of my kids doesn’t eat the PB or J and the activity is just as fun for them.

Parent setup:
Say, “You’re the coder. I’m your robot. You’ve just created a teachable (and hilarious) bug.

If they’re old enough they’ll correct it automatically. If not, Pause and ask:

“What went wrong? What was missing or unclear?”

Then debug by adding details:

Open the jar.

Use knife to scoop a little.

Spread Not saying they don’t…but you know. I discovered the not-my-parents-polite mode, spilled over into their interactions with AI. Most prompts included etiquette and made the activity below even easier. Keen to know if it’s the same in your household.

Prompts that include magic words work better, and not just because they sound nice. When we add “please,” “thank you,” or “can you help me,” we’re quietly doing something powerful: slowing down, thinking about what we’re asking, and shaping it with care. That pause and precision make both people and AI understand us more clearly. The “magic” isn’t in the words themselves; it’s in the attention, respect, and clarity behind them.

Every family will find their own version of this. Think of it less as a rulebook and more as a mindset: communication, whether with humans or computers, works best when it’s kind, safe, and accountable.

🧩 Technical notes: Research suggests that the tone and structure of our prompts can influence how well large language models respond. Studies have found that impolite prompts often lead to lower-quality answers, while prompts that include moderately polite, calm, courteous phrasing like please or thank you can help models produce clearer, more context-appropriate responses. This effect varies by model, language, and task, but overall multiple studies confirm, intentional, kind prompting tends to yield better interactions. End by asking us one question about what happens next.

When kids use intentional prompts—kind, clear, and curious—they become more confident communicators with people too. They pause before asking, listen more closely, and adjust their words to express ideas or fix misunderstandings. Families describe a calmer rhythm: better prompts, better conversations, and a shared understanding that kindness and clarity help every interaction—online and off.

Together, studies show that polite, intentional prompts improve both AI responses and empathy at home. Families notice kids becoming more thoughtful and focused as they practice pausing before asking, adjusting their words, and seeing results. This reflection, guided by SAMI, reinforces that communication built on kindness and clarity works equally well with people and AI.

Parent Script Box

Simple phrases you can drop during the week.
Each phrase reinforces calm, intentional communication.

“We use kind words with people and helpers like AI.”

“We keep our info private: names, school, faces, address.”

“We question first, then prompt.”

“We choose to do what’s kind, safe, and true.”

“Magic words help us slow down, think and care.”

🚀 Next Up: From Prompts to Patterns

Next post, we’ll build on everything you’ve practiced with a new theme: Algorithms - How Machines Learn.
Kids will discover that algorithms are like recipes: clear steps that make predictions and decisions. We’ll explore how AI “learns” from examples and how humans stay in charge of the ingredients.

If you’d like a gentle bridge to start that conversation now, try this one-liner:

“We used our words wisely today; next time, we’ll learn how computers follow steps like recipes.”

This reflection helps us connect the dots from intentional communication to structured problem solving.

🎯 Quick Reflection for Parents

Let’s acknowledge this is all really new, novel stuff and we already have negative time in our days…so we need light-touch, intentional ways to keep our own learning loop active.

What surprised me most about how my child guided AI today?
What will I remind them of next time?

Write or voice-note it in a place you can easily go back to.

📚 Further research (bedtime reading?)

• Yin, Z. et al. — starting where curiosity and caution meet.

Who this is for: Busy parents who want their kids to benefit from AI, responsibly, without the drama.

Outcome today (≤15 min): Set house rules, try a first prompt together, and finish with an offline activity.

How do I introduce AI to my child (ages 3–13) safely in 15 minutes?

We’re raising three AI natives: ages 3, 5, and 7. We follow the research, the experts, and the endless parent feeds. We try, a lot. And yet, like most parents, we still wonder if we’re doing it right (and believe we should be doing better :)

What surprised us most is how little research exists around raising kids with ai, like a real field guide for helping kids understand, utilize, and guide AI. Unlike coding, the nuances that matter most here aren’t technical. They’re developmental — cognitive, social, emotional, and about a child’s emerging sense of self. And if AI is anything near as impressive and pervasive as most believe it will be, our ai natives will soon be responsible for stewarding this ai future, or at the very least, living it.

Over this past year, I started compiling the most important research on AI technology, responsible use of AI, and early childhood studies to build the parent guide I wish we had.

Let’s jump in. No jargon. No context needed, just 15mins (timed with my 7-year-old).

AI used to be Under the Hood at every big tech company but in the last couple of years… it’s kinda Everything, Everywhere All at Once.

Your edge is shared learning and clear boundaries.

Your kids mirror you. A tiny weekly ritual beats a big lecture.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
